Steve Macnaughton

Steve Macnaughton (Mr. Mac) is the Curriculum Leader for the Arts department. He has been teaching at Northern for over 30 years. He received a Bachelor in Fine Arts from York University, his Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto and also has an Honours Specialist in Visual Arts.

He currently teaches drawing, painting and visual arts. He has also developed several specialized courses relating to specific aspects of art. He is also a practising fine artist.

Through the years, Steve has organized and led many school activities such as the Yearbook, the Art Club and organizing the art for Drama productions. One unique activity that he has spearheaded is supervising the mural paintings within the school. The students under Steve’s tutelage use the lockers as canvases and every year the lockers at Northern transform themselves into brightly coloured murals.

At Northern he has coached both the girls and boys Hockey teams. Outside of Northern he plays and coaches hockey and works on his photography and painting in his home studio.

Ultimately, what Mr. Mac loves to do is teach art to the great art students of Northern Secondary School.

Chris Carbone

Chris Carbone is a practicing artist who also teaches at Northern. He completed both a Bachelor of Arts (1982-86) and a Bachelor of Education (1994-95) at the University of Toronto. Since 1984, Carbone’s brightly coloured abstract paintings have appeared in many group and solo exhibitions, as well as a dozen juried competitions.

Seeing himself firmly in the abstract expressionist and colour field traditions, the artist cites painting giants such as Richard Diebenkorn, Mark Rothko, and Barnett Newman as the historic inspiration for a “deeply emotional” body of work. He views the whole painting process as a means of self-discovery.

A dramatic sense of colour and light characterize the work of Chris Carbone. His paintings can be described as luminous, imaginary vistas that are contrasted by horizontal or vertical bands, which enhances a deep and rich atmosphere. His work can be found in private and corporate collections in Canada, the United States, Bermuda and Japan.

Adele Clarke

Adele Clarke has a Bachelor of Fine Arts, a Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University and holds and Honours Specialist in Visual Arts. After teaching in Mexico at the American School of Guadalajara and living with the Nissga’a Nation in northern British Columbia she began her teaching career at Northern in the visual art department. She currently teaches Material Arts and Life Drawing at Northern.

Louise Moran

Louise Moran currently teaches Ceramics at Northern Secondary School.  She is extremely proud of her present and former students who have produced the most amazing ceramic pieces. It is her hope that her students leave the studio with an appreciation for art, clay and jazz, the three elements that permeate the studio.

Louise is a graduate of York University (Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours) and The University of Western Ontario (Bachelor of Education). She has an Honours Specialist in Visual Arts. She is  committed to life long learning and has studied enameling at St. Lawrence College, figure drawing and woodworking at the Haliburton School of Art,  ceramics at The Royal Ontario Museum, clay and printmaking at Sundance Studios in Utah and Eastern Art History at The University of Toronto. She continues to struggle through Italian studies but fears that she will never be able to conjugate all of those verbs.

She has spent the majority of her twenty year teaching career at Northern but also taught at Riverdale C. I., Eastdale C.I. and Jarvis C.I. as acting Head of Art. She returned to Northern as the Assistant Head of Art. Over the years she has introduced students to numerous art media, including: ceramics, pottery, cloisonné and champleve enameling, silk painting, silk-screen printing and silver and gold jewelry casting.

In her life away from school, Louise is a practicing artist and has had solo and group shows at The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, The Women’s Art Institute, Toronto and U.S. galleries. She is the daughter of a carpenter and enjoys woodworking.  She built a cedar-strip Kayak and spends as much time as she can on the water.
