Our very own grade 11 Drawing & Painting student, Emily Xu, was this year’s 17th Annual smART stART Student Art Show’s ‘Strongest Design’ winner in their People’s Choice Awards.

Our annual art show, Northern Lights, was an exciting evening filled with art galore!  Northern students proudly showcased their art work to our community. We had clay chess-sets, traditional oil paintings, life drawings, prints, original logos and packaging, masks and artworks of a myriad of media and styles.
During the show our student artists demonstrated ‘how to grow a painting’, and how to use the potter’s wheel to make clay bowls.  We also had fabulous guitar and string musicians – with terrific support from our music teachers, Ene Lomp and Paul Newman.

Northern’s Visual Arts students appeared predominantly at this April’s Delisle Youth Gallery, “Beyond the Blue” http://www.delisleyouth.org/pages/art-gallery-y .  Northern’s students helped out in many ways at this show.  Our student artists represented here included: Jenani Anantharajah, Aaron Brown, Kameron Doyle, Janice Lee, Cole Neilson, Alex Schoenborn and Janice Trang.  Aaron Brown posed proudly with her painting – which was selected for the show’s poster, alongside with Filomena D’Andrea, Director of Clinical & Community Services.  The show continues until April 30^th. We’ve included some photos on our website which show some of our students at this exciting event.

 Comic book artist and illustrator Ron Boyd recently came to work with the grade 10/11 Design students on their comic book unit.  Ron has worked as an inker for both DC and Marvel comics on many of their titles, as well he has worked as an illustrator for diverse clients like Corner Gas and The Silver Snail.  During his visit he focused on layout and design, showing the students how to create flow and interest in their stories.  His insight helped students create more dynamic compositions to help reflect the action of their heroes.

Some of our grade 9 classes will be working with artist Brian Hoxha this month on printmaking.  All of our students are busy finishing paintings, sculptures, ceramics, designs and colourful drawings in preparation for our annual arts show. You are all invited to “Northern Lights”, on Thursday, May 2^nd 6:30 to 8:30pm.
