Art Foundation AVI1O1

This course is exploratory in nature, offering an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials by using a range of media, processes, techniques, and styles. Students will use the creative and critical analysis processes and will interpret art within a personal, contemporary, and historical context.

This course is intended for students who plan to pursue an art career. Not only do the students take the grade 9 Art Foundation course, but they also take grade 10 Life Drawing simultaneously, so that they have an art class every day. This provides a solid foundation for students though they can make lateral moves within the arts program in future years.

The majority of assignments for this course are studio projects produced in clay. There will be a variation of forming techniques used including pinch, slab, coil and wheel. All studio projects start with drawing exercises and design work, experimentation of media and final projects. There will be a varied approach to each unit including student presentations, tests and reports. Students will complete written analysis of personal, historical and contemporary work.  Students will be encouraged to participate in class critiques.

Design projects are challenging and offer important opportunities to develop and apply a greater understanding of the elements and principles of Design.The foundation that is established by the Design program is a benefit to those students who wish to pursue post-secondary studies in one of the many design related fields such as Animation, Architecture, Fashion, Graphics, Interior and Stage Design, just to mention a few. Students who successfully complete the Design program gain valuable experience and preparation for post-secondary education at the University and College level.At this level you will be introduced to the ” Design Process “, you will also be encouraged to develop project ideas that reflect a high standard of achievement. A productive and collaborative relationship with your instructor and classmates is an important part to a successful learning experience.Much of the language of art relies on the “Elements and Principles”of design. The Visual Arts – Design Program includes this language extensively, allowing students an opportunity to develop the vocabulary required to discuss art effectively. Projects and activities require an on-going development of the “Elements and Principles” of Design. The “Elements and Principles”of design are the “tools of application”.

Students will review and be knowledgeable of the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques, and styles. This course offers a continuation to the techniques, materials and media previously introduced in the grade 10 drawing and painting course. Students will review and be knowledgeable of the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques, and styles. They will learn and use methods of analysis and criticism. They will continue to be familiar with a variety of media already applied and develop an appreciation and understanding of acrylic painting. They will also attempt to understand the process from realism to abstraction both from a historical approach and a practical application of the media through a variety of projects. Prerequisites AWM2O1 or equivalent, or art teacher’s recommendation

Life Drawing I AWL2O1
Grade 10 Open
Life Drawing is a challenging course and offers many opportunities to build skills that are transferable and complimentary in every area of the arts from design and applied craft to animation and the Fine Arts.The foundation course in Life Drawing concentrates on the proportion of the human form, the use of negative and positive space and the use of a variety of line and value to capture the form on page. The language used to convey and assess outcomes is rooted in the elements and principals of art, and the various tools and techniques of application to illustrate the form.
 
Life Drawing AWL3/4M1
Grade 11/12 University/College Preparation
The majority of assignments for this course are studio projects that are developed and executed in class. Students have various opportunities to explore the form on paper using various media. The final project culminates in a 3 dimensional project using wire and cardboard. Students also study master works, and execute studies that explore the myriad ways in which line and value can express emotion and the temperament or character of the sitter. Each class begins with gesture drawing and often props and drapery are used to animate the drawings. Assignments are often lengthy and involve between 4 to eight class periods. The studies produced in this course, as well as the projects produced, are to be used for portfolio entrance to both college and university art departments. The application of the elements and principals of art, the study of classical composition, as well as the vocabulary of art are expected as prior knowledge before beginning this course.

This course enables students to develop their skills in producing and presenting art by introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic exploration and experimentation. Students will apply the elements and principles of design when exploring the creative process. Students will use the critical analysis process to reflect on and interpret art within a personal, contemporary, and historical context.
 
Visual Art AVI3M1 Visual Arts
Grade 11, University/College Preparation
This course enables students to further develop their knowledge and skills in visual arts. Students will use the creative process to explore a wide range of themes through studio work that may include drawing, painting, sculpting, and printmaking, as well as the creation of collage, multimedia works, and works using emerging technologies. Students will use the critical analysis process when evaluating their own work and the work of others. The course may be delivered as a comprehensive program or through a program focused on a particular art form (e.g., photography, video, computer graphics, information design).

Grade 12 University/College Preparation
This course focuses on enabling students to refine their use of the creative process when creating and presenting two and three-dimensional art works using a variety of traditional and emerging media and technologies. Students will use the critical analysis process to deconstruct art works and explore connections between art and society. The studio program enables students to explore a range of materials, processes, and techniques that can be applied in their own art production. Students will also make connections between various works of art in personal, contemporary, historical, and cultural contexts.
Prerequisite: Visual Arts, Grade 11, University/College Preparation
